Ygor Marotta is an audiovisual artist based in the countryside of São Paulo. His work is hybrid, expressed through drawing, animation, video, projection, virtual reality and music.
He is the creator of the urban intervention “mais amor por favor”, which since 2009 has covered the walls of cities across Brazil and beyond with wheatpaste posters.
He is part of the artistic duo “VJ Suave” with Ceci Soloaga. Working with digital art since 2009, they have produced four short films of projected animation in motion: Trip (2013), La Cena (2012), Homeless (2011), and Run (2011).
In 2012 they developed the Suaveciclo, a tricycle fitted with a projector, computer, speakers and a battery that carries moving images through the city streets. Since its creation, the Suaveciclo has travelled to festivals around the world.
In 2017 VJ Suave assembled a team to develop an interactive virtual-reality game called Floresta Encantada.
In 2018, together with Paulo Stoker, they created the video-mapping work “Roda de Força”, a tribute to Mestre Môa do Katendê. The piece was projected onto the Salvador Courthouse and features the voice of Criolo on its soundtrack.
VJ Suave has performed in more than 25 countries, taking part in festivals of light, digital art, street art, new media, video-mapping, cinema, music and animation.
Ygor is part of the music project Pássaro, alongside Irû Waves and Tomás Xavier. The trio has released two albums, “Pássaro Encantado” (2019) and “Antes de Existir o Mundo” (2022). Both are available on streaming platforms. The most recent album was released on vinyl in a limited edition of 500, distributed worldwide.
In 2021 the artist began exploring generative art under the alias "microdosys”, developing paintings and animations in collaboration with artificial intelligence, using code, text and imagination. The project has taken part in video-mapping festivals in Canada (Mapp Montreal) and Belém, Brazil (Amazonia Mapping Festival). Works have been exhibited at NFTRio, Hacktudo (MAM-RJ), MAC (Niterói, Brazil) and Computex (Taipei/Taiwan).
The artist also works as a curator and has served on the juries of film (Russia), animation (Slovakia) and video-mapping (Brazil) festivals.
As an educator, he has led workshops in Brazil, Canada, the United States, China, Japan, Taiwan and Russia, among others. He teaches in universities and schools, for children and artists, sharing the use of the tool Tagtool, a collaborative app for real-time painting and animation. In 2022, Ygor released, through Domestika a complete Tagtool course, teaching the app in a simple way and sharing techniques, inspirations and creative processes.
In 2023 he premiered the anti-colonial work Tupinambá, a VJ Suave creation made together with Glicéria Tupinambá and Paulo Stoker. Tupinambá was created in 2020 but was banned from the site it was made for. It was shown only three years later, as video-mapping on the facade of the Pará State Museum, through Amazonia Mapping.
In 2024 he premiered the immersive installation Aves do Ceará at the Museum of Image and Sound in Fortaleza, where it ran almost every day of the year. That same year he joined an international tour, presenting VJ Suave with the Chinese band "Mola Oddity". Ygor co-directed and created the visual set together with Paulo Stoker, developing animations for 18 songs. As a VJ, he played all 15 shows across 9 cities during the spring in China.
He developed his first immersive generative-art installation together with Renata Chebel, using artificial intelligence and TouchDesigner. "Temple of Reflections" was shown at Taiwan Technology and Culture 2024 in Kaohsiung.
